DAY TWO SUNDANCE RECAP: TWO FEMINIST FILMS
My Student Film Pass safely arrived and earlier to boot at the ResortQuest office but before that, I caught the documentary Pussy Riot - A Punk Prayer at the Temple Theater (Temple Har Shalom for the rest of the year). It’s a really fascinating and empowering look at the female punk band that took on Vladimir Putin and the Orthodox Church’s grip on post-Soviet Russia.
After I got my...

MY FIRST DAY RECAP AT SUNDANCE
I almost didn’t make it to Park City this week. Yesterday, just as I had arrived at the Long Beach airport for my flight, I got a call from my mom who told me that I had left my film school pass at the place that I was staying in Pasadena. Thank goodness for rush overnight delivery from FedEx!
After a half-hour drive from the airport, we went to the ResortQuest office to temporarily leave...

It's Oscar prognostication time! →
After going through the various precursor awards/nominations from the critics and the guilds, and weighing in on my personal preferences based on what I’ve seen and my assumptions on the Academy’s tastes based on the insider buzz, this is what I came up with.

Bob’s Burgers S03E05 - An Indecent Thanksgiving Proposal
My Neighbor Totoro reference
Was excited to see this! :D
I didn’t expect this cartoon of all places to make a Studio Ghibli reference. I’ve slowly been catching up to Bob’s Burgers this season (partly based on my newfound summer crush of that quirky firecracker Kristen Schaal), but this moment just...

Still absorbing my thoughts on The Master
Damn, what a movie!
It doesn’t quite reach the operatic highs of There Will Be Blood (still his best film, though Punch-Drunk Love still remains my personal favorite of his) but there’s still a lot of great things about it all over the place. At times it feels less a savage indictment on Scientology and similar cults but more like P.T. Anderson’s riff on The Miracle...

THE END OF AN INTERNET ERA
Can’t believe it was more than four years ago when I first saw my first Nostalgia Critic video on YouTube. Since then I’ve followed every episode and saw him branch out into different characters and later on developing his own site that not only showcased his own videos but also provided an opportunity for other Internet personalities to thrive creatively...

“Time isn’t a straight line, it’s more like a David Lynch movie, it’s this wandering meandering thing that just goes in all directions, and if you’re very lucky, by the end you’ll see some boobies and maybe some little people” - Dr. Insano

BFI's Sight & Sound Critics' Poll 2012 →
Every 10 years, the British film magazine Sight & Sound asks a group of film professionals from around the world to provide a list of ten films each and then vote on the greatest film of all time. Initially limited to film critics, a separate poll was conducted beginning in 1992 among film directors. In the first poll conducted in 1952, Vittorio De Sica’s Bicycle Thieves claimed the top...
